Rhiannon // The 8 of Wands

The 8 of Wands (A card of action; swiftness. Conveys immediate information or action, journey or motion. News swiftly travelling. Because the suit of Wands relates to information, look for new communication and unexpected news) depicted as Rhiannon.

From Welsh mythology, she was the goddess of horses and the sea whom ancient Celtic riders would seek for protection. I decided to paint Rhiannon on the cliffs by the Celtic sea, as I wanted to do a bit more of a landscape piece.

Originally I was going to have her riding the horse, to tie in more with the swiftness of the card’s meaning but after playing around with a couple of different compositions I chose a calmer and more placid pose, which comes across very contemplative as I liked the idea of her sitting atop the cliff, listening to the roar of the waves below. I suppose I painted her in the opposite symbolism of the card, but that’s okay - it’s my tarot deck after all ;-)
