Freyja // The Chariot

The Chariot (Victory, conquest over difficult odds and unexpected good news) depicted as Freyja. The Norse goddess associated with love, beauty, magic, shamanism, seer, sacrifice, war, death, and sexuality. Freyja is the owner of the necklace Brísingamen, rides a chariot pulled by two cats and possesses a cloak of falcon feathers.

I felt a lot of pressure with this painting as I’ve never really painted cats before! I practiced quite a few sketches before the main painting and decided to make the cats look quite wild and fantasy-like. I was reading Neil Gaiman’s latest book Norse Mythology at the same time as painting this, which was a nice bit of serendipity.

This painting took me about three weeks to complete as I was very busy at work and travelling so didn’t have a lot of energy for painting. I may come back to this in the future and add more plaits to her hair, but I felt I needed to stop tinkering with it and move on to get back into the flow.
